Energy efficient products FAQs

I can only afford one new energy efficient appliance right now. Which should I start off with?
If you can only afford one at the moment, perhaps it would be best if you either started with a washer or a dryer. Even though refrigerators use their share of energy from being plugged in all day, washers and dryers can use large amounts of energy – especially is they are used more than once a day. Energy efficient washers are manufactured to use the water needed to wash clothes in a more effective manner. Energy efficient dryers can tell when clothing us dry and shut off immediately when that happens.

How can I decrease my carbon footprint?
Decreasing a carbon footprint is not as much about quitting doing certain things as much as it is about being more mindful of the resources you use when you do certain things. For example, if you live close to the store, taking your bike instead of the car every once in a while would decrease the energy you use and decrease the size of your carbon footprint. Likewise, doing things like letting your clothes drip dry in the summer instead of throwing them in the dryer is another way to decrease your carbon footprint without needing to make major changes to your life.

I’ve heard that I should buy Energy star appliances, but what’s in it for me?
If the allure of saving energy is not enough an enticement for you to use Energy Star appliances, perhaps saving money is more attractive to you. Energy Star appliances use less energy, which, in turn, means that you will pay less money for the energy you use. There are also tax credits available in many places for people who buy certain kinds of Energy star appliance. Being able to save a little bit of money still may not be a huge enticement, but as time goes on, the amount of money saved will increase exponentially.
