Energy efficient appliances
For some people, the words “energy efficient appliances”
almost sounds like an oxymoron. They wonder how some of the biggest
energy users in your home could actually be energy efficient.
The fact is that if you have appliances in your home older than five
years old, you are probably missing out on some appliances that are
designed to be much more energy efficient than what you are using.
Some of these energy efficient appliances include:
• Refrigerators – Refrigerators are among
some of the biggest users of energy in your home. One of the main reasons
for this is because these appliances are always running and always plugged
in. In the last few years, government mandates have started to require
manufacturers to create refrigerators that are energy efficient appliances.
However, even if you do not choose to buy a new refrigerator, this does
not mean that you cannot save energy. Doing something as simple as turning
the temperature up slightly in the fridge and the freezer could make
a noticeable difference in your electricity bill, but you will likely
not notice the difference in how your refrigerator operates.
• Washers and dryers – Washers and dryers
have both traditionally been a couple of the biggest wasters of energy
around. There are now washers that are much more energy efficient appliances
than their predecessors. For example, some washers are programmed to
know exactly how much water to use depending on the load of wash you
have in it. This can help save water as well as gas, which is used to
heat the water.
Likewise, there are also dryers that are much more sophisticated than
they were a few years ago. One of the more popular features in some
of these energy efficient appliances is the feature that allows the
dryer to turn off automatically as soon as the clothes are dry. The
dryers use a moisture detector to tell them when to shut off. This is
especially helpful when you turn the dryer on in the evening just before
you go to bed because it will not be running needlessly.
